Theodore Brantly was born in Wilson Count, Tennessee on February 12, 1851, the son of Edwin and Eliza (Brown) Brantly. He graduated from Stewart College in 1874 and then studied law at Cumberland University. He taught ancient languages at Lincoln University in Illinois before being appointed to the faculty at the College of Montana in Deer Lodge in 1887.
